fall pearl style

A pearl among designers and the original ‘rare bird of fashion,’ Iris Apfel, incorporated pearl jewelry and pearl accessories into her iconic flamboyant styles.   She set the bar high for fun and unrestricted self-expression in fashion. “STYLE IS ATTITUDE; IT’S NOT WHAT YOU WEAR, IT’S THE WAY THAT YOU WEAR IT” – this was the mantra of maverick designer, Iris Apfel, famed fashion and jewelry designer, restorer, decorator, lecturer, pearl wearer, and style icon of the 21st century.

As with pearl designs, Apfel believed all good design is about self-expression.  She felt that one can suffer from too much “good taste” and she liked to have fun with pearls, pearls, pearls and all other fashion choices. She believed that one could never really make a “mistake” in style and if fact felt that it was good to have “a few little mistakes.”  She was once told by Frieda Loehmann, founder of the famed department store,   “You’re not pretty and you’ll never be pretty, but it doesn’t matter. You have something much better. You have style.” Fortunately, pearls are always pretty regardless of opinion-makers.  Pearls always say great style.  Pearls are fun.  Pearls are fabulous.  Apfel was all about being a style leader, social butterfly and having fun while wearing as many types of accessories and pearls as she wanted. She curated and celebrated the fun of fashion, interiors, pearls, lifestyle, and the arts, through her lifetime of design choices and design work.

Apfel’s philosophy in three words: “ONLY ONE TRIP” (might as well live it up!)  Today, top American fashion designers are seeking to live it up and bring laid-back luxury to this season’s fall 2015 looks.  They’re having fun with layers for fall and we can layer on the pearls.  Laid-back luxe is the style word today; care-free pearl accessories and pearl jewelry are layered on together with vintage pearls for just the right touch of “style attitude.”
