Choosing the Right Pearl Necklace Length

When purchasing a pearl necklace, it is important to be sure that the length chosen is suitable for what it will be worn with and who will be wearing it. There are several different lengths you can choose when purchasing a pearl necklace.

Choker Length

A choker length pearl necklace is between 12 and 13 inches. It is sometimes worn when women are looking for a Victorian look as it was a popular style during that period. They often include more than one strand and are the perfect choice for off-the-shoulder bodices or tops with lower-cut necks. They are usually worn tight around the neck. Many times, chokers are used for more formal occasions.

Collar Length

Collar length pearl necklaces are between 14 and 16 inches in length and are worn more loosely than a choker. They often rest just inside the collar bone and are perfect for button-up shirts or dresses with an open neck or scoop-neck bodices that are higher than strapless dresses.

Princess Length

A Princess length pearl necklace is slightly longer than the collar length necklace at about 17 to 19 inches. They are well-suited for almost any attire, from jeans to dinner dresses. They lay on the upper-most chest and are also commonly worn with tight fitting sweaters or turtlenecks.

Matinee Length

Pearl necklaces that are between 20 and 24 inches are known as matinee length and are often used for semi-formal occasions or business attire. They rest lower on the chest, normally just above the bust area and can also be worn with tight fitting shirts or turtlenecks.

Opera Length

Pearl necklaces that are between 28 and 34 inches long are opera length and get their name as they were commonly worn by society women when they went to the opera many years ago. They are worn in single strands or doubled and changed to a matinee length. Longer versions that are more than 45 inches long are known as rope necklaces and often have clasps throughout the strand so that it can be broken down to shorter lengths or bracelets.

With the many different lengths of pearl strands available, you could actually purchase a different necklace to go with almost any outfit you own.
